What Does a Home Generator Installation Cost — And Is It Worth It?

Let's Be Honest About What You're Looking At

Completed Generac standby generator installation on residential property in Eastern Ontario by Eldridge Electric

A whole-home standby generator is one of the most significant investments a homeowner can make — and one of the most justified ones for anyone living in rural Eastern Ontario.

Whole-home standby generator installations typically start from approximately $19,000 and vary based on the size of the generator required, your fuel source, site conditions, and whether any panel work is needed beforehand. That figure includes the generator unit, automatic transfer switch, concrete pad, all electrical work, ESA permit, and a cold weather kit — everything needed for a complete, code-compliant installation.

It's a real number. And once you understand what drives it and what you get for it, most homeowners tell us they wish they'd done it sooner.

What Drives the Cost of a Generator Installation?

Understanding the variables helps you evaluate the investment honestly.

The Generator Itself

The generator unit is the single largest cost in any installation. Sizing is based on your home's electrical load — the appliances, systems, and circuits you need powered during an outage. A proper load calculation determines the right generator for your home. Going too small means your generator can't handle demand. Going too large adds unnecessary cost. We do the load calculation during the free on-site consultation, so you know exactly what size you need before any commitment is made.

For most Eastern Ontario homes — particularly those with well pumps, electric ranges, gas furnaces, sump pumps, and central air — an 18kW to 22kW Generac Guardian is the most common recommendation. The price difference between sizing options is often surprisingly small relative to the overall investment.

Site Preparation

Every installation includes a concrete GenPad on a compacted gravel base, direct-buried TECK90 power and control cabling, and a grounding electrode system. These aren't extras — they're part of a complete, code-compliant installation. Site conditions, such as cable run length and ground conditions, can affect the scope, which is why a site visit is essential before any pricing is confirmed.

The Automatic Transfer Switch

Every whole-home generator installation includes a 200A Service Entrance Rated Automatic Transfer Switch. This is what detects an outage, switches your home to generator power within seconds, and switches back when utility power returns — all without you doing anything. It is not optional and is included in our installation pricing.

ESA Permit & Inspection

Generator installations in Ontario require an ESA permit. We obtain it, coordinate the inspection, and include the permit fee in our pricing. You never deal with that process yourself.

Cold Weather Kit

Eastern Ontario winters are hard on standby generators. Every installation we complete includes an oil pan heater and battery warmer as standard — not as an add-on. This is essential for reliable cold-weather performance and something not every installer includes automatically.

Gas Connection

Connecting the generator to your natural gas or propane supply requires a TSSA-licensed gas fitter — a separate trade from electrical. We coordinate the gas connection on your behalf, sourcing a licensed gas fitter, presenting the quote to you for approval before any commitment, and scheduling their attendance alongside our electrical work. You never pay for gas work without approving the cost first.

This is the part of the conversation most homeowners don't hear until after they've committed — and we think that's the wrong approach.

What Else Might Be Required?

  • A standby generator connects directly to your home's electrical panel. If your panel is an older fuse panel or an undersized 100A breaker panel, an upgrade may be required — or strongly recommended — before the generator can be installed properly.

This is not a problem. It's a known variable. We identify it during the free on-site consultation and present it as a clearly priced add-on so you can make an informed decision before signing anything.

The panel upgrade add-on is available as a fixed price — either a fuse-to-breaker replacement or a full 100A to 200A service upgrade — and is presented alongside your generator quote so you have the complete picture from day one.

  • When a generator switches your home on and off utility power, voltage fluctuations occur. A whole-home surge protection device protects your appliances, electronics, and the generator itself from damage. We offer several options from $290 and up — and genuinely recommend it as part of any generator installation.

  • If a panel upgrade is included, Hydro One coordination is required to disconnect and reconnect your meter. We handle that coordination entirely. The one thing we're transparent about: Hydro One's scheduling is outside our control and can affect project timing. We plan around it as best we can.

Why the Cost Is Justified — Especially Here

For urban homeowners, a generator is a comfort purchase.

For rural Eastern Ontario homeowners, it's closer to a utility.

When the power goes out in Maitland, Merrickville, Mallorytown, or even Brockville, restoration times are measured in hours — and in rare cases, days. Your well pump stops. Your sump pump fails during the same storm that caused the outage. Your furnace shuts down in January. Your freezer full of food starts to thaw.

A standby generator eliminates every one of those scenarios automatically. No action required. No extension cords. No portable unit in the garage that you have to start up and remember to fuel.

For a home where power reliability directly affects water, heat, and daily function, the question isn't really whether it's worth it. It's whether you want to keep dealing without it.

Financing is Available

We understand that a whole-home generator is a significant investment. Eldridge Electric is pleased to offer flexible financing options through Financeit, one of Canada's leading home improvement lenders.

Spread your payments over time with competitive rates and a simple online approval process. Ask us about financing options when you book your consultation — we're happy to walk you through what's available before you commit to anything.

How Our Payment Process Works

Generator installations are structured across three milestones rather than a simple deposit and balance:

  • 40% deposit due upon signing — secures your installation date and allows us to order your equipment

  • 40% progress payment due upon delivery and placement of the generator at your property — at this point, the equipment is yours

  • 20% final payment due upon completion of all work, successful ESA inspection, and your walkthrough sign-off

There are no surprises. The price we quote after your site visit is the price you pay. Any scope changes are discussed with you first and confirmed in writing before additional work begins.

What You Get That Most Quotes Don't Include

When you compare generator installation quotes, make sure you're comparing the same scope. Here's what every Eldridge Electric installation includes as standard:

  • Generator unit and automatic transfer switch

  • Concrete GenPad on compacted gravel base

  • TECK90 power and control cabling, direct buried

  • Grounding electrode system

  • Cold weather kit — oil pan heater and battery warmer

  • ESA permit and inspection coordination

  • Gas connection coordination (TSSA-licensed fitter)

  • Full system commissioning and automatic transfer test

  • Mobile Link WiFi monitoring setup

  • Client walkthrough and orientation on completion

  • Portal-to-portal crew travel included

Nothing hidden. Nothing added after the fact.
